DIY Baby Legwarmers

DSC01855-001OG won’t wear pants.

Or socks for that matter.

sigh

So how does one keep such a child warm?

A while back I found a tutorial (or two) floating around Pinterest for DIY baby legwarmers (like BabyLegs) and I thought they were super cute and functional (no need to take them off for diaper changes!) so I’ve been on the look out for discounted knee socks so I could make some.

I finally found these ones at Target (on clearance for $1.75 a pair) so I bought two pairs.

What you need:

  • A pair of ladies knee socks
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine or needle

What you do:

Cut across the ankle of the socks just above the heel (this is going to be the legwarmer). Cut the heel and toe off of the bottom part so you just have what goes around the middle of your foot (this is going to be the bottom cuff).DSC01833-001

Fold the tube from the bottom part of the sock in half (wrong side together) so it looks like this:

Put the tube over the cut end of the sock so that you have a tube that is 3 layers thick. Pin if you want but it’s not really necessary.

Sew around the tube. You don’t have to be perfect or even really good (but go for it if you want to).

Unfold the cuff. That’s it!

See? Mine are definitely not perfect!

That’s two sets of legwarmers for $3.50.

It’s tough getting a 14 month old to model :)

This is a really fast and easy project too.  From beginning to end it took me about a half hour (including taking pictures). AND you don’t have to be a great seamstress either. Since the legwarmers are going to be a bit bunched up you really don’t notice any imperfections.

It turns out OG doesn’t love to wear these either, BUT when she is okay with wearing them at least I dont have to wrestle her to get them back on after every diaper change (like I would with pants).

Have you made your own baby legwarmers before? What did you do differently?

My daughter has lived in leg warmers since she was 3 months old. (She’s 18 months now). They’re so great for when you cloth diaper — you’re not wrestling her out of pants 10 times a day! (By the way: my daughter has the exact same diaper cover. We have so much in common!) I found that both homemade and official BabyLegs have their advantages: the homemade are way (WAY WAY) cheaper, but the BabyLegs last way longer. (She’s still wearing the BabyLegs she got when she was 3 months old — though they’re pretty worn — while the homemade ones have since been tossed). So it’s good to have some of both!

I love that chair in the pictures, too, by the way. Where’d you get it? Also: I’d say you did a pretty good job getting her to model!

Good points :) I’d also say that babylegs are more customizable for size while the homemade ones are just one size. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and I got the chair on Amazon :)

It is really easy, which is maybe why it’s hard to explain :) basically you just take the part you cut from the bottom of the sock and fold it so it makes a cuff.

These are super cute, and so much easier to make than the leg warmers I knit for my little girl. Great work! Do yourself a favor and always buy dark/patterned socks for leg warmers, because we have a set of white striped that are doomed to be dirty all the time.
